Get Into The Gardens - NEW

"Get Into The Gardens" is a new weekend program that provides free educational programming to visitors at Birmingham Botanical Gardens. The series will include family-friendly demonstrations, the return of Hikes for Tykes, an educational outdoor adventure designed for preschool children and their families, and Sunday Scene, an educational walk through each of the gardens at Birmingham Botanical Gardens.

All programs are free.  Registration is not required.  Meet in The Gardens' plaza.

Demonstrations

Family-Friendly Demonstrations

Themed “Big Ideas, Small Spaces,” the first sessions will be held bimonthly beginning on March 16, are free to the public and appropriate for all ages. From planting peppers and tomatoes to creating a Mother’s Day herb garden and to explaining simple watering strategies, there is an educational opportunity to fit eclectic curiosities on Saturdays this Spring.

Hikes for Tykes

Beginning at 10 a.m. every Saturday, Hikes for Tykes is another free program provided to visitors of The Gardens, this walk encourages pre-school children and their parents to engage in an outdoor educational adventure.

Saturday, May 7 , 10 a.m. Hikes for Tykes, Birmingham Botanical Gardens


Join Miss Anwen from Fresh Air Family for a magical walk for pre-school children and their families through the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. In May, look for dinosaur plants- the Gardens. Lots of modern-day plants date back to the time of the dinosaurs, can you find them all? Do you think dinosaurs found these plants tasty? Geared for pre-school children and their families. Plenty of hands-on learning while having fun with the flowers. A partnership with Fresh Air Family and The Gardens. Free.
 
Saturday, May 14, 10 a.m. – Hikes for Tykes Oh Say Can You Seed?, Birmingham Botanical Gardens


Walk through The Gardens discussing the functions of flowers, fruits and seeds. Read Oh Say Can You Seed? And make bean seed necklaces for pre-school children to take home while discussing what seeds need to grow. Look for seedlings, buds and flowers on the walk back to the plaza. A partnership with Fresh Air Family and The Gardens. Free.
 
Saturday, May 21, 10 a.m. – Hikes for Tykes, Birmingham Botanical Gardens


Join Fresh Air Family storyteller, Verna Gates, for a magical mystery tour of The Gardens. We will look for legendary creatures while making up a few of our own stories along the way. At the end, we will build fairy houses/forts out of natural materials.  A hands-on adventure for pre-school children and their families. A partnership with Fresh Air Family and The Gardens. Free.
 
 
Saturday, May 28, 10 a.m. -  Hikes for Tykes, Birmingham Botanical Gardens


Would You Rather Be a Pollywog? Walk through The Gardens discussing what a pond is, what might live there. Read Would You Rather Be a Pollywog at the Japanese Garden pond then discuss why it might be nice to have a pond in a garden.  Let them ring the Friendship Bell with a friend before leaving. A partnership with Fresh Air Family and The Gardens. Free.

The Sunday Scene

The Sunday Scene also returns as the final component of the series, leading visitors on educational walks through The Gardens.
All walks in the Sunday Scene begin at 2 p.m.
